What in the World is a Serum?

Updated: Jul 18, 2022

I know the feeling of confusion when it comes to serums. Before becoming an esthetician I had no idea of what to do with a facial serum. I had so many questions. Is it a moisturizer? Should I put it on after I moisturize? Do I even need a serum? I’m sure many of us have heard of the more popular serums, vitamin C and Hyaluronic acid; but what do they really do for our skin?

I'm here to answer your serum questions. Let's jump right into it!

First things first,

What is a facial serum?

Serums are skin care products that deliver powerful ingredients to your skin; through high concentrations of active ingredients. The textures are usually liquid or clear, and more light weight than a moisturizer making them easier to be absorbed by the skin. Serums feed your skin the nutrients it’s missing!

What serum ingredients are best for your skin concern?

Dehydration: Hyaluronic Acid, Lactic Acid

Dryness/ dullness: Vitamin C, Squalane, Lactic Acid

Oily: Niacinamide

Anti-aging: Vitamin A, Retinol

Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid are two powerhouse ingredients that all skin types can benefit from!

When to use a serum?

Since serums are packed with powerful ingredients that are meant to penetrate deep into the skin, and work immediately; it is important to use them before moisturizing and after cleansing.

Other ways to apply serums:

You can also apply a serum before masking. Facial masque send nutrients into the skin to reveal beautiful skin on the outside. By applying the masque on top of the serum, it helps the serum to penetrate deeper into the skin. Mask no more than once a week!

Serum Caution:

When using serums be sure to not over do it. Serums are made with high concentrations; which means, they are stronger than most products in your skincare routine. Some can become too powerful for your skin and cause dryness or peeling such as retinol. Ask a skincare professional for assistance if you are unsure.

Should you use a serum?

Your skin will definitely thank you for adding a serum to your routine; especially in the winter months. As the seasons change your skin goes through changes as well. You may experience dryness, tightness, or flaking as it gets colder. A hyaluronic acid serum would be perfect to help put moisture back into the skin. There are also serums for hyperpigmentation, skin brightening and sensitivity. Try adding one to your routine today. You will not be disappointed!
